“If it’s inaccessible to the poor, it’s neither radical nor revolutionary.”

-Attributed to Jonathan Herrera

This quote exemplifies my career in science communication from my start as a first generation rural community college student to my own career teaching. Science should be accessible to everyone and the open access publication movement is a key part of making that happen.

Science writing is a popular genre. And while there are many great popular science books in print, none exist to specifically discuss the basics of science and research methods. Science is a Journey: The Wisdom of a Thousand Faces is an open access popular science book that uses the narrative of the Hero’s Journey to discuss the history of science and introduce scientific methods.

I am an associate professor of psychology at Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake City, Utah. I co-founded multiple local science communication initiatives and am now expanding to share my love for science with the world through this book.
